Nine major Western artists featured in ‘BEST of the WEST’

The Ann Korologos Gallery in Basalt presents the work of nine acclaimed Western artists in the upcoming Best of the West” exhibition. Opening with an artists’ reception on Friday, January 8 from 5 to 7 pm, the exhibit will feature nine artists the gallery represents who were featured in this year’s Coors Western Art Exhibition and Sale.

A wide selection of fine art, including painting, photographs, prints and sculpture will be on view. Each artist contributed a half-dozen works, with the show totaling more than 50 pieces. “We asked each artist to submit what they consider their best new work for this exhibition,” says gallery director Julia Novy. “These are iconic pieces of art that represent what each artist is most well known for, and most sought after.” An expansive outlook is the common denominator, with each artist offering a personal vision of the American west.

Contemporary landscape painter Terry Gardner has participated in many national shows and has received numerous awards including the Editors Choice Award from Southwest Art magazine.

Dean Mitchell’s razor sharp watercolors can be found in corporate and museum collections across the country. For three years in a row, he won the Best in Show Award from the Mississippi Watercolor Society Grand National Competition.

Jill Soukup transitioned from graphic design to painting and has continued to gain recognition and win awards ever since. The Nov/Dec 2012 issue of Fine Art Connoisseur included Jill in their “Artists Making Their Mark.”

Andy Taylor is inspired by the tremendous variety of landscape within a few hours of his hometown of Carbondale. His work presents a fresh view. “Often,” he says, “I will be taken by a roadside scene, something I see on the way to a destination.” Recognizing the locations of the scenery he paints is something viewers at the gallery love to do.

Accomplished fly fisherman Dan Young is also a masterful plein air painter. Dan has built a following among art collectors and a reputation as one of Colorado’s premier landscape artists.

Dinah Worman’s simple, contemporary painting style is instantly recognizable for its clarity and strength. Worman has also earned the designation of Master Pastelist from the Pastel Society of America.

Leon Loughridge keeps the old world tradition of wood block printing alive from his studio in Denver, creating stunning editions using multiple blocks, hand-mixed inks and unusual papers this self-described “paperholic” hunts for on the side.

The popular work of Joel Ostlind quietly observes the wide open spaces and wildlife of his native Wyoming in spare, elegant black and white copper plate etchings.

Sculptor Amy Laugesen’s fragmented equine abstracts create a statement housed in both an ancient and contemporary context.

Best of the West” will be on view at the Ann Korologos Gallery through February 16, 2016. For more information, please visit the gallery at 211 Midland Avenue in Basalt, call (970) 927-9668 or email art@korologosgallery.com.
