Andy Taylor | Studio Perspectives

Over the last 50 years, Carbondale, Colorado based painter Andy Taylor has developed a colorful, gestural style that conveys the mood of a landscape and reflects the emotions evoked by a moment witnessed. Taylor sits down with Ann Korologos Gallery to explain his perspective, his passion, his excitement, and the rules he keeps in mind as he paints. Below, find the transcript from this video.

“What gives me the most pleasure or excitement in what I do is an outright exploration. Now, that’s drawing outside; that is one of the greatest things in the world, I think. My mind just disappears. I don’t even have to really concentrate anymore, I just sit down and go with it.

“It’s sort of like: keep it simple, leave well enough alone, know it isn’t perfect necessarily, [don’t fuss it to perfection] maybe fussing with it might make that part perfect but you’re going to ruin the other 90%.

“To look at it, it had to interest you, probably. And then you have to decide why it interests you. What’s important about this? Now, it can jump right out at you, why it’s important. It might take some thought. I don’t know. I’m not always into it, but  it can be a little bit of a curse to walk down the street and see paintings all the time. Or to say, maybe that, maybe that. You know. I just enjoy it.”
