The american experience - the journey west 2009
The American Experience is our on-going art series which features the many artists who have shaped America as we know it. The Journey West celebrates three artists who have chosen the West as their source of beauty and inspiration. Nathan Solano, Heather Foster, and Gordon Gund have taken very different approaches to what makes the West special to them.
The exhibition itself is an exercise in contrasts. First it is Solano who captures the moody vastness of the American wilderness using his unique use of light. Next it is Heather Foster who brings us back to the whimsy and majesty of the ubiquitous stock animals roaming the West. The very same creatures we so often ignore. And finally, it is Gund's sculptures which pull us into the absolute intimacy of the west in its natural state. The artist is blind, and must sculpt by feel. So to fully understand his work, we too must touch them.
It is these contrasts and surprises that make the West so rich in landscape and Art. So join us as we experience the West through the work of these three very different artists. Join us as we Journey West.
